Low-Pressure System Forms Over Bay of Bengal, Cyclone Development Anticipated

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, projecting its northeastward movement and potential intensification into a depression by Friday.

As per the meteorological office, the depression is expected to persist in its current trajectory, gaining strength and advancing towards the northeast and adjacent northwest Bay of Bengal by Saturday evening.

The IMD stated that this would mark the first cyclone formation in the North Indian Ocean basin for the year.

Warnings & Precautions

In light of this potential cyclone, the IMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in Assan, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday and May 26. These regions are advised to prepare for potential flooding and disruptions.

The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the Bay of Bengal until May 26. The rough sea conditions expected in the coming days present a significant risk to small vessels and fishing operations.

Heavy Rainfall in Southern INDIA

The IMD forecasted severe to very heavy rainfall in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Puducherry on Thursday. The weather office also predicted rain in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for the next seven days.

Red Alert in Kerala

A red alert has been issued for Kerala’s Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts due to severe rain expected to persist until Saturday. The continuous heavy downpours in these regions raise concerns about landslides, flooding, and disruptions to daily life.

Impact and Response

At least four people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents across Kerala, underscoring the severity of the current weather conditions. Additionally, the flight operations at Calicut International Airport have been affected, causing travel disruptions. Authorities are on high alert, with disaster response teams deployed to manage emergencies and provide relief to affected communities.

Preparation and Safety Measures

Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed through official weather updates and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities. Preparations should include securing property, stocking essential supplies, and having an emergency plan in place.
