Lenovo debuted a revolutionary innovation at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 in Barcelona, the world’s first-ever transparent laptop. This futuristic marvel, named the ThinkBook Transparent Concept, boasts a borderless screen, a translucent keyboard area, and a unique floating footpad design reminiscent of technology seen in science fiction films.

According to The Verge, the laptop features a 17.3-inch borderless screen capable of achieving up to 55 percent transparency when pixels are set to black. However, transparency decreases when pixels light up. With a peak brightness of 1,000 nits and a 720p display, the concept laptop promises a visually striking experience.

In contrast to many premium models, the Lenovo Thinkpad Transparent opts for a MicroLED display rather than an AMOLED panel. The Times of India notes that this choice promises superior saturation, transparency, brightness, and overall image quality compared to OLED alternatives.

While Lenovo held back details regarding the hardware specifications of its latest transparent laptop, it did disclose that the device operates on the Windows 11 operating system, aligning it with numerous other high-end offerings in the market.

In addition to the transparent display, Lenovo’s concept video unveiled a flat touch keyboard, projected rather than physical, that subtly fades when the pen is brought close to the Thinkbook. According to Lenovo, this transparent laptop could prove especially beneficial for artists or architects, providing them with a unique platform for sketching and creative endeavors.

When will this latest technology be available to users?

Similar to its predecessor, the rollable laptop unveiled at MWC last year, the newest transparent laptop serves as a proof of concept. However, Tom Butler, Lenovo’s executive director of the ThinkPad portfolio, expressed to The Verge that the company holds “very high confidence” in the technology’s potential to evolve into a tangible laptop within the next five years.
