Google Rolls Out Identity Check Feature for Select Android 15 Devices

Google has rolled out a new feature called Identity Check for select devices worldwide, adding an extra layer of protection to Android devices. This feature addresses scenarios where someone could access your device despite knowing your passcode, PIN, or password.

How Identity Check Works

Identity Check requires users to authenticate themselves through biometrics, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, to access sensitive accounts or device settings. This update complements existing security tools like Theft Detection Lock and Offline Device Lock, enhancing user data protection in case of theft.

The feature is triggered when your device is outside trusted locations, such as your home, making it harder for thieves to disable anti-theft features or change security settings. However, its effectiveness may be limited if unauthorized access occurs within a trusted location.

The concept of Identity Check has been anticipated since rumors emerged last year. Now officially launched, it provides robust protection by requiring biometric authentication for key actions, such as changing the device PIN, disabling theft protection, or accessing Google Passkeys.

Integration with Existing Theft Protection

Identity Check seamlessly integrates with Google’s existing Theft Protection tools, which include features like Theft Detection Lock, designed to secure your device if forcibly taken, and Offline Device Lock, which activates shortly after the device goes offline. Both tools, introduced in late 2024, are available globally on Android 10 or later devices.

Availability and Setup

The rollout of Identity Check begins with Pixel devices running Android 15 QPR1 stable and select Samsung Galaxy models on One UI 7. To enable it, navigate to:
Settings > Google services and preferences > Primary Google account > All services > Theft protection.

The feature is expected to expand to other Android manufacturers later this year, likely delivered via updates to the Find My Device app or Play Services.
