Google has started rolling out a new feature for its Gemini AI that makes working with PDFs more efficient. First introduced at Google I/O 2024, the “Ask about this PDF” feature is now available in the Files by Google app. This tool allows users to ask questions directly about a PDF, simplifying the process of extracting information.
How to Use the Feature in Files by Google

The feature is part of Google’s Gemini overlay, which integrates AI-powered tools across Android devices. When viewing a PDF in the updated Files by Google app, you’ll see a button labeled “Ask about this PDF.” Tapping this button allows you to upload the document and ask questions about its content. For example, you can request a summary, ask for clarification on specific sections, or inquire about details in tables or charts.
Once you tap the “Ask about this PDF” button, the app will upload the document. While the file is uploading, the send button will remain inactive. After the upload is complete, you can submit your question, and Gemini will provide its response as an overlay, letting you view the PDF in the background. You can also ask follow-up questions without restarting the process.
This feature mirrors the capabilities already available in the Gemini app, where users can upload files and discuss their contents. However, the integration within Files by Google simplifies the experience by keeping everything within one app, saving time and effort by eliminating the need to switch between apps.
Exclusivity and Future Prospects

Currently, this feature is exclusive to the Files by Google app and does not work with Google Drive’s PDF viewer, which still only offers the standard “Ask about this screen” option. While this may disappoint some Google Drive users, there are possibilities for future updates to expand this functionality to other apps.
It’s also important to note that the “Ask about this PDF” feature is only available to Gemini Advanced users. This version of the AI supports a longer context window, enabling it to process and understand larger documents more efficiently. If you’re not using Gemini Advanced, you won’t have access to this feature. This update is part of version 16.0.5 of the Google app, currently in beta, and is expected to be available to a wider audience soon.
